What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a safe medication that has been used for the past fifty years by anesthesiologists to help keep individuals asleep and free of pain during procedures. However, during recent clinical trials, Ketamine was shown to help depressed patients rapidly improve their depressive symptoms. The medication has been shown to alleviate and help other disorders such as Treatment Resistant Depression, PTSD, OCD, and addiction. Doses of Ketamine used in psychiatric settings are nearly a fraction of those used by anesthesiologists.

What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Like most therapeutic practices, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy works to help individuals alleviate emotional and psychological suffering, recognize negative patterns, untangle symptoms, and create sustainable change. Targeting receptors in the brain, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy works to restore structures in the brain that may have been altered due to trauma responses, addiction, or depression. In other words, Ketamine works to decrease ego defenses, and begin to look through life from a new perspective. When fully restored, individuals are able to regain pleasure, and experience emotions and responses without the painful and associated memories from traumatic events and experiences.

The chemical structure of Ketamine can additionally bring forth relearning, rewiring, and create new associations with memories. Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy can initially allow individuals to work through and find healing in difficult unconscious patterns, memories that may be repressed, and to break habits in a profound way with assistance from a therapist.

What Happens During a Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Session?

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy sessions are two hours in duration. During this time, the therapist holds space while the client goes deep within their experience in a safe space with appropriate “journey music”. The peak experience typically lasts 30-60 minute. The next hour is then dedicated to integrating the experience therapeutically.

Ketamine will be administered either by intramuscular injection, or IV. Typically after 3-7 minutes individuals will experience deep relaxation and a sense of dissociation or “removal” from one’s self. Visuals are common during the peak experience, lasting up to an hour. During this time, it is the individual's choice to talk with their therapist, however there are those that will prefer to keep their experience internal. Once the individual comes out of the peak state, they will process and integrate their experience with the therapist.

Is Ketamine Safe?

During Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy Ketamine is used in miniscule amounts, however, it is safe even in high anesthesia doses. Typically, these sessions will cause thinking distortions necessary to find healing and usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. Within our medical concierge services, a doctor or physician’s assistant will meet with the client at the beginning of each session to determine the proper dose for each session. Doses typically increase each session until the optimal dose is found for each individual.

Who Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy For?

While this path of holistic therapy is not intended for everyone, individuals must be evaluated before an initial session on a case-by-case basis. Those who benefit most from Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy can include:

  • Those who have tried other psychiatric treatments and therapies but have been unsuccessful.
  • Those who are open to having a spiritual experience to help create long-term change.
  • Those looking for assistance in decreasing or or eliminating certain psychiatric medications.
  • Those struggling with addiction that have underlying depression, anxiety or trauma.

Is Ketamine Effective For Addiction?

The addiction liability to Ketamine is extremely low, and in a safe and controlled environment, here are continual studies published about how Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is safe and effective for those suffering from depression, PTSD, and addiction. Even after one session, there is no evidence stating that Ketamine contributes to addiction. In fact, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy may help reduce cravings, and enhance your experiences along with psychotherapy. Used under the direction of a medical provider and in conjunction with other routes of therapy, Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy can help individuals create realistic and sustainable changes in their lives for the long-term.
