Recovery Coaching

Successful recovery requires making a mindset and lifestyle change, managing relationships, and re-entry into everyday life. Recovery coaching is a prerequisite for most people to achieve long-term success and continuous sobriety. Every coach at Root Recovery is a certified Being True to You Recovery Coach.

What is Recovery Coaching?

Addiction is more than a chemical dependency, the root cause of substance abuse is a means of coping with difficult emotions, or a set of unhealthy habits. In early recovery having someone to talk to and maintaining sober support is vital to maintaining sobriety.  Having the support of someone who has training or experience in substance use disorder and mental health, they can offer solutions and support that might be hard to find otherwise.

Root Recovery has partnered with Being True to You’s "Addiction Recovery Coaching Program," which is a revolutionary approach to facing addiction that is based on “transformational recovery.” This model focuses on the opportunity of recovery more than the “disease” and problem of addiction. The program is designed to be fun, motivating, life-changing, practical, and customizable. Through personal transformation a person can naturally mature out of their addiction and achieve success far beyond sobriety, on their own terms.

Our recovery coaching model is both trauma and addiction informed and is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive plan that includes appropriate social support and practicing new lifestyle skills, which we provide at Root Recovery.

We have adapted our method of recovery coaching to include integration work, thus making meaning of the experience. We also teach how to tap into the intelligence of the body to move out traumatic or otherwise charged content that may be contributing to the urge to use.

What Does A Recovery Coach Do?

A recovery coach serves the purpose of supporting a client while also holding them accountable as they pursue their unique goals. While a therapist may be able to diagnose mental health disorders and encourage treatment, a recovery coach offers the tools, guidance, and support an individual needs to follow their own path. This may include:

  • Helping the client establish goals and create a plan to execute them
  • Direct the client to the resources available to help with their individual goals
  • Provide relatable accountability and support
  • Help the individual navigate through the medical system
  • Educate the client on developing new patterns of behaviors
  • Encourage harm reduction for addictive behaviors
  • Establish a safe relationship in which the client can be rigorously honest
  • Educate the client on how to accomplish everyday responsibilities neglected during his/her addiction
  • Give the client an objective perspective on their progress

Recovery coaches offer assistance to help individuals with the day-to-day process of overcoming addiction and living a healthy life in recovery. Recovery coaches will create a trustworthy relationship with the client by practicing active listening, maintaining a positive tone, offering encouragement during struggles, and helping to keep an overall positive outlook on life.
