Long-Term Sustainable Recovery

There are many huge differences in conventional “unsustainable recovery” approaches and our “sustainable recovery” approach. The conventional approaches characterized by 12-step models and rehab programs have a 10% success rate on average. That means that 90% of people who engage those conventional models relapse. Relapse is very risky. In the case of opiates, it can be fatal. 

The leading edge of substance abuse treatment has pioneered a new model in the last five years, and we are among the leaders in this movement. We call it Sustainable Recovery, and this approach is getting 70% success rate. In the case of our program in Austin Texas, 100% of our clients are still alive and 70% have successfully remained clean and sober. Even using the most conservative figures, our approach is getting more than 500% better outcomes than 12-steps or rehab. 

Our highly-effective programs help individuals craft an ideal, personalized recovery plan and then we support them as they implement that plan for the first year. We have numerous options and packages available to meet different needs and budgets based on each person's unique circumstances.

Alternative Medicine Detox Treatment  

We do not offer detox services at Root Recovery, however, we are aware of all of the many alternatives (new ones coming available every year), and can discuss with you which options might be appropriate based on your specific substance use, health / medical concerns, psychological / therapeutic needs, ability to travel if an ideal option isn't available in your city, and any budget constraints you are working with. The good news is there are many, many options that can be configured to meet your needs.

It is crucial to recognize that the old-paradigm, traditional / conventional detox services are woefully inadequate for most people. The results are usually disappointing. The great news is that medical science has progressed exponentially in the last decade, and addicts now have numerous "alternative medicine" detox treatments available that, for many clients, minimize or reduce the symptoms of withdrawal, while providing the body and brain the necessary support to create the optimal foundation for a long-term sustainable recovery.

Many of these options significantly increase the brain's "neuro-plasticity" so that it becomes much easier to change habits and learn new ways of thinking and behaving. Because sustainable, long-term recovery always begins with the right detox for the person's unique situation, we often start supporting our clients at this beginning stage by discussing your option to help you figure out the best detox method that is available.

Aftercare  

Many people aren't aware how absolutely crucial the first two months after detox are. It is technically the start of the "early recovery" phase. Whatever the environment, support system and experience the addict has immediately following detox, will in large part, determine how successful the recovery attempt will be.

Clearly you can't go through detox and then go right back into the old environment, with the old stressors and triggers, and immediately start interacting with the same people that were part of the addictive behavior cycle. 

In the recovery industry, the first one to months after detox are referred to as "aftercare." This basically means, the time right after detox and before the addict attempts to return to the environment associated with the addictive behavior. We refer to this time period, and the environment that must be created that is conducive to success, as "cocooning."

Root Recover is seen in the industry as one of, if not the, leading expert in aftercare or "cocooning." The trauma-informed, holistic, integrated and alternative methodology we pioneered in the last few years is achieving an astonishing 500% better outcomes than conventional approaches to alcohol and drug treatment methods. 

We offer both Residential Aftercare (the first month after detox) and "Extended Aftercare" which involves the client coming to our facility each day and then sleeping at their own residence in the evenings. Many people find that one month of Residential Aftercare followed by one or two months of Extended Aftercare provides the optimial "cocoon" to protect and enhance their early recovery. 

Longer-Term Recovery Support 

After detox treatmentand one to two months of "cocooning" (aftercare), the next phase is to begin to transition back into ordinary life successfully. This transition takes the rest of the first year (9-10 months). This transition from early recovery into longer-term recovery will determine whether the addict is successful in their recovery if if they relapse. Our longer-term programs combine education, coaching and community to provide the optimum support for a sustainable recovery. Many of our clients extend their stay in Austin to be part of our community during their first year of recovery. We have transitional living residences where our clients can live with other people in their first year of recovery. We also offer various educational, one-on-one coaching and group coaching programs to provide weekly support as our clients make that crucial transition from early recovery into sustainable recovery. This includes learning new coping mechanisms, new ways of thinking and behaving, and creating a new, more healthy and sustainable lifestyle in recovery.

Recovery Coaching

Successful recovery requires making many mindset and lifestyle changes, and to learn many new approaches for coping with stress and triggers, managing relationships and re-entry into the "real world." Recovery Coaching is a prerequisite for most people to achieve long-term success. Every coach at Root Recovery is a certified Being True to You Recovery Coach. 

Root Recovery partnered with Being True to You’s "Addiction Recovery Coaching Program," which is a revolutionary approach to facing addiction that is based on “transformational recovery.” This model focuses on the opportunity of recovery more than the “disease” and problem of addiction. The program is designed to be fun, activating, motivating, life-changing, practical, and customizable. Through personal transformation a person can naturally mature out of their addiction and achieve success far beyond sobriety, on their own terms. 

Our recovery coaching model is both trauma and addiction informed and is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive plan that includes appropriate social supports and practicing new lifestyle skills, which we provide at Root Recovery. 

We have adapted our method of recovery coaching to include integration work, thus making meaning of the experience. We also teach how to tap into the intelligence of the body to move out traumatic or otherwise charged content that may be contributing to the urge to use.

Nutritional Approach

The cornerstone of our philosphy at Root Recovery is to replace old thinking and behavioral patterns that reinforce addiction with a new mindset supported by practices that connect one to their inner truth. While it's important to change thinking patterns, one must also address the damage done to the body by chronic substance use. As such, we have a live-in chef who prepares meals designed to help repair and rebuild the body after being depleted by addiction. A healthy vibrant physical being is vital to healing one's connection to self and by healing the body, the foundation is built to support healing of the whole person (mind, body, and spirit).

1:1 Integration and/or Trauma Therapy

Not only will you receive recovery coaching to help identify, build, and support a new lifestyle, you will also receive therapy from a licensed psychotherapist that is highly trained in psychedelic integration therapy. So while coaching helps give tools and support to live the life you desire, this type of therapy gets to the root of the addiction itself. EMDR is often utilized in this work as an integration tool along with psychodynamic and Internal Family Systems Therapy. 

Cryotherapy 

Cryotherapy is a natural pain reduction remedy. It is a great way to get a natural rush and relieve pain without relying on medication. This treatment is chemical-free and all natural. Cryotherapy treatment uses only cold nitrogen gas. When you stand in the cryotherapy chamber, this gas surrounds your body for three minutes. After that, you can exit the chamber with less pain or no pain at all. The cold slows down nerve pain signals, which is responsible for this pain relief.

Breathwork

The Breath Work is a guided breathing and meditation therapy that teaches mindfulness and increases the client’s awareness of their spiritual self. This holistic therapy is based on the principles of Pranayama and Shamangelic Breathing techniques. Most people leave their Breath Work session feeling energized, inspired, and uplifted. Many people have also discovered a deep level of healing. Breath Work is an amazing holistic supplemental treatment, along with therapy, to aid in your recovery from addiction and a lifelong skill that you can take with you throughout your journey of sustainable recovery.

Hiking and Swimming 

Many recovery professionals associate today’s widespread issues with addiction to a societal disconnection of mind, body, and nature. There have been many studies published that demonstrate the numerous benefits to one’s physical and mental health as a result of exposure to nature. A new study from the University of Plymouth is the first to find that simply being exposed to ‘green spaces’ from your home can reduce cravings for alcohol, cigarettes and unhealthy foods. Built upon previous studies examining exercising in nature and reduced cravings, this study indicates that exposure to greenery can reduce cravings regardless of physical activity. ‘Natural Environments and Craving: The Mediating Role of Negative Affect,’ led by Dr. Leanne Martin, found that being able to see nature/greenery from home can decrease the strength and frequency of addiction cravings.

Austin possesses a wealth of hiking trails and swimming holes in and around the city. One of our favorite activities is to combine them by hitting the trails that lead to favorite water spots for a refreshing swim before heading back. Weather permitting, we get out almost daily... so pack some good hiking shoes and bathing suit!

Yoga 

Yoga is a complementary health practice that is often considered a natural form of medicine. The Yoga Journal describes modern yoga as the use of physical postures to learn how to connect mind, body, and breath to gain self-awareness and focus attention inward.

Yoga is increasingly being used in recovery to help prevent relapse, reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and provide a healthy outlet to cope with potential triggers and daily life stressors.

At Root Recovery, we practice both hatha yoga and kundalini yoga. Daily yoga practice is incredibly effective as a way to work with the thought patterns that can creep in and cause certain reactions, behaviors, and compulsions. Yoga is a gentle yet powerful way to exercise the mind, body and spirit during the early recovery phase. It is a practice we do "inside the cocoon" to help prepare you to successfully transition from early recovery into longer-term recovery. 

Important: This Unique Approach is Not For Everyone

While Root Recovery is one of the most respected programs of its kind, it is not for everyone. Root Recovery is an "at will program" and thus we only accept individuals with a strong desire to create a healthy fulfilling life after addiction. We are not a traditional "treatment" facility nor do we operate as a rehab model. We offer an alternative integrative aftercare model that enables individuals the ability to create a lifestyle that supports sustained recovery. We are very selective and only accept applicants that are a strong fit for our program and that will have a high probability of success. This program is not a good fit for individuals with low motivation or who are being coerced into treatment.  In order to determine if you or your loved one is a good fit for our program, we do require screening and an interview (either in person or video conference) to evaluate "fit." The True Cost of Addiction and Recovery

Financing Your Sustainable Recovery 

Addiction is a life-threatening medical and psychological condition. It is treatable. But if it goes untreated it becomes very dangerous and very costly. An active addiction is expensive in both financial and non-financial terms. With addiction and recovery, you pay now or pay later. There is no “low cost” or “no cost” option. However, there are "lower" cost options. We strongly encourage our clients and their loved ones who are contemplating the cost of treatment to take into account the "Total Cost" of untreated addiction and the cost of treatment in both financial terms and non-financial terms.  

There are only three ways out of addiction. Death, incarceration, or a “sustainable recover” approach that gets to and heals the root cause.  We can calculate many of the financial and non-financial costs of addiction and recovery. If you are contemplating the cost of treatment, you must also take into account the cost of relapse and the probability of relapse.  Clearly a relapse can be very costly in financial and emotional terms.

There are three scenarios that addicts and their loved ones face: 

  1. No further treatment (still is expensive in many ways and is very dangerous)
  2. Conventional treatment with high chance of relapses (dangerous and also expensive)
  3. Alternative / Sustainable  Recovery with very low chance of relapse (what we do)

The alternative sustainable approach to recovery that we support does require a financial investment in the first year, but over several years, is actually cheaper than conventional approaches! On average, the total financial cost for an entire year of sustainable recovery support is about the same as one month of rehab (the conventional model). And yet our method produces 500% better outcomes than the rehab model. Rehab is both expensive and has a very high level of relapse (as do many 12-step and traditional methods). Our approach is less expensive over the course of 1-2 years (all costs taken into account) with a very low chance of relapse. 

An investment into aftercare and transitional living "extends the runway" of your early recovery phase so that you have the time you need to heal what needs healing and to build the new skills and lifestyle habits necessary for long-term success. 

There are many options and packages available, including ones that you may have not explored yet. To determine the best approach for you or your loved one, we need to take into account your needs, risks, financial ability, and so on.
