Based on your answers, our software has compiled a detailed "Recovery Roadmap" that offers numerous options that can inform your own research, conversations and decision-making about the best path forward. (If you completed the questionnaire you will see a version of this page that is specific to you as the client entering recover or as a loved one of a person considering entering recovery).

Sustainable Recovery

While many people and services in the recovery field are still operating on information from the 1970s and 1980s, the industry has evolved quickly in the last decade. Today, it is now crystal clear what the difference is between failed recovery attempts and long-term, successful recovery. If you are serious about success, it is essentiall to arm yourself with the knowledge of what is working today.

[Note that if you are seeing this, you are viewing the "generic" version of this page without having completed the questionnaire. Once you complete the survey, you will see a version of this text that speaks to you as either the client or the loved one of someone with addiction.]

It is crucial for you to understand that recovery from addiction is so much more than "absitance" or "behavior modification." Addiction is a complex blend of physical, psychological and environmental factors. If these factors are not adequately addressed, then attempts at "sobriety" are almost always temporary. Many of the ideas that are promoted by 12-step (once-an-addict, always-an-addict) approaches are just flat wrong. And the revolving door of 30-day rehab clinics that exploit insurance payment methods mainly focus on the symptoms of addiction but rarely address the root causes of addiction, which works well for their business model of "repeat customers" but is tragic for their customers and their families.

Conventional approaches have an average of a 7-10% success rate. Put another way, if you go down the conventional road, you can expect a 90% chance of relapse. The new approaches that have gained traction in the last 5-10 years have a 50% to 70% success rate! Before you spend any more time, money or energy on 12-step programs or rehab, or any other conventional approaches, please get the facts about "long-term sustainable" recovery.

Requirements of Sustainable Recovery

Sustainable recovery has four main components, which we will explain in this Personalized Recovery Roadmap. They are:

  1. Alternative Medicine Detox
  2. Protecting Early Recovery through Cocooning
  3. Uncovering and Treating the Root Causes of the Addiction
  4. Developing the Necessary Skills that Sustainable Recovery Requires

If you are to be in the 50-70% success rate rather than the 10% success rate group, then it is essential that you really understand what it takes to be successful.

Are you aware of what is required for a person to build a strong, solid foundation for sustainable recovery? Have you considered what it takes to create a new life and lifestyle beyond addiction?

Have you considered the mindset shifts, the stress / coping / relationship skills that will be necessary?

What psychological healing (such as early-childhood wounding or trauma) must be addressed? What kind of emotional or psychological growth will be required?

What kind of social support and new forms of community will lead to a sustainable recovery?

Now that we have surfaced some of the crucial issues that can lead you one down the path of sustainable recovery, in the Personalized Recovery Roadmap that follows, we will outline the key factors and some of the options that are available to you to help you have a successful journey.

Considering Your Options for Detox

[Note that if you are seeing this, you are viewing the "generic" version of this page without having completed the questionnaire. Once you complete the survey, you will see a version of this text that speaks to you as either the client or the loved one of someone with addiction.]

The first step on the journey of sustainable recovery is detox treatment. Unfortunately, many addicts and their loved ones are unaware of the huge medical advances that have taken place in the last decade in the field of medical detox and especially alternative medicine detox.

The good news is that there are many viable methods that can minimize or even eliminate withdrawals. Further, some of the alternative medicine methods increase the body's resilience to bounce back from addiction and/or provide increased "neuro-plasticity" in the brain which helps the addict with their psychological treatment to identify and treat the root causes of addiction (often childhood emotional wounds and/or trauma) and adopt new mindsets and learn new behaviors and skills quickly.

While a comprehensive analysis of all the detox methods available and a detailed description of what might be your best options are beyond the scope of this initial report (that was prepared for you based on how you answered the questions), we can introduce some of the best options and then have a phone call with you to help you think through which type of medical detox / alternative medicine detox makes the most sense for your circumstances.

Beginning Recovery Phase

Detoxification Breakthrough Treatment #1

[Note that if you are seeing this, you are viewing the "generic" version of this page without having completed the questionnaire. Once you complete the survey, you will see a version of this text that speaks to you as either the client or the loved one of someone with addiction.]

Perhaps you have heard about the astonishlingly effective new alternative medicine detox treatment called Ketamine + NAD. Maybe you haven't. The good news is this relatively-new method is extremely effective and widely available. Imagine what it would be like if your first step toward sustainable, long-term recovery was possible with minimal withdrawal symptons?

Ketamine + Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD) Therapy is an alternative medicine detox protocol that is rapidly gaining popularity across the United States and other countries.

For many clients, Ketamine + NAD provides a nearly painless detox experience from the effects of drugs and alcohol. The treatment helps restore your body’s health and recovering your neurotransmitter supply. Ketamine + NAD treatment doesn’t cure addiction. However, it helps heal the body and brain to boost recovery at the cellular level. For those struggling with substance abuse disorders, this can tip the balance in their favor and improves the likelihood of long-term recovery. In some cases, clients report recovery within two weeks with dramatically reduced cravings for opium and opioids

Ketamine + NAD treatment can provide relief for an addicted brain. Clients in recovery have witnessed the powerful transformations available when using this treatment as part of a comprehensive recovery program. You can read about the numerous studies showing its efficacy here on the United States National Institute of Health (NIH) website.

NAD is a co-enzyme of niacin found within cells. It helps the body by turning food into cellular energy. Lab-produced NAD also boosts helpful chemicals in the body. However, it takes several sessions to sustain the changes. NAD+ IV infusion accelerates DNA repair, brain function, and cellular communication. NAD is a coenzyme that fuels many important processes in the body.  Given in larger doses to addicts, it allows them to easily and quickly detox from the powerful grip of drugs and alcohol. NAD acts to increase energy levels, reduce oxidative stress during detoxification, and stimulate the production of neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. It reduces irritability and anxiety while the body is cleansing and recovering.  It helps to improve and regulate the sleep-wake cycle and provides the mental clarity and focus required to overcome addiction.

Ketamine is a powerful tool in assisting in the maintenance of sobriety from drugs and alcohol.  Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) is the emotional and psychological withdrawal phase that occurs shortly after physical detoxification. Ketamine infusions act to significantly reduce PAWS, and the cravings that usually result in a return to substances of abuse.  In addition it helps to quickly treat depression, anxiety, and pain, which frequently go hand in hand with addiction and the recovery process. In several recent studies, Ketamine has been shown to prolong abstinence from alcohol and opioids in detoxified alcoholics and opioid-dependent individuals.  It is able to significantly reduce cravings in cocaine abusers.

In the last few years, it has become clear that there is a powerful synergy between NAD and Ketamine.  A series of intravenous infusions, over a week to ten days, can produce a rapid and well-tolerated detoxification from drugs and alcohol with minimal withdrawal symptoms. It then ceases the cravings, pain, and depression that usually result in a return to substance abuse. This combination therapy is as close as one can get to a truly painless detox, and it is one that is widely available in most cities across the U.S. Ketamine + NAD Therapy has a number of benefits over conventional detox options, including the following:

  • The alternatives, naltrexone, suboxone, and methadone can have negative side effects and can even trigger new addictions. In contrast, Ketamine + NAD has no toxic side effects, such as experienced with methadone and prescription drugs used to wean clients off illicit substances.
  • Unlike toxic medications, Ketamine + NAD won’t harm the brain with long-term use, in fact, research studies show that it actually stimulates new healthy brain cell and neurotransmitter growth and increases neuroplasticity
  • Ketamine + NAD has restorative qualities that heal cells via biogenesis — healing by stimulating regeneration
  • Ketamine + NAD protects neurons in the brain
  • Ketamine + NAD reduces cravings during opiate and alcohol withdrawal. Compared to other drugs used during detox and recovery, NAD’s natural solution treats the brain gently.

While Root Recovery does not offer detox treatment, we are extremely familiar with the options available including a lot of experience working with clients who come to our facility after receiving treatments from many of the most reputable providers. When you speak to us by phone or Zoom we can discuss this with you and help point you in the right direction.

Detoxification Breakthrough Treatment #2

[Note that if you are seeing this, you are viewing the "generic" version of this page without having completed the questionnaire. Once you complete the survey, you will see a version of this text that speaks to you as either the client or the loved one of someone with addiction.]

As mentioned above, alternative medicine plays a central role in sustainable recovery because it helps create the conditions in the body and the brain that are usually necessary for successful early-stage and long-term recovery. While the above-described Ketamine/NAD treatment has shown incredible results and is widely available in most cities in the U.S., this second medical breakthrough is even more significant for some people, especially people with poly substance abuse and/or people struggling with opiate addiction. Untreated alcohol, cocaine and methamphetamine use can be very dangerous. Perhaps the most dangerous substance is opioids. The bad news is that opioid use is a tragic epidemic and that it is considered a life-threatening condition. It is very dangerous to allow any addiction to go untreated, especially if opioids are involved. The good news is that there have been enormous breakthroughs with alternative medicine in the last decade, including one in particular that, for most people, minimizes or completely eliminates withdrawal symptoms while simulaneously increasing brain neuro-plasticity that makes it much easier to change mindsets, behaviors and habits, and learn new coping skills more easily.

It is a method called "Ibogaine Alternative Medicine Detox." It is not available yet in the United States but it is available in Mexico. We do not provide detox but there are many reputable providers just south of San Diego that many of our clients have utilized. If you / your loved on can travel to San Diego, California and have a valid U.S. driver's license, you may consider the option of Ibogaine Alternative Medicine Detox services provided in Rosarito, Mexico.

Ibogaine Alternative Medicine Detox treatment has been shown over the last decade to be an absolutely unparalleled as a tool to help addicts recover from opioid addiction for three main reasons.

  1. In most patients, it eliminates most or all withdrawal symptoms
  2. It creates high levels of neuroplasticity (making it easier to change old patterns)
  3. For many patients, it uncovers a lot of rich psychological material that an be used by a skilled therapist to uncover and treat the root causes addiction

While ibogaine is highly recommended for people serious about getting off of opioids, it is not for everyone.  A person must meet certain health requirements and there is some risk.

The biggest risk is that it resets the “drug tolerance” back to zero. If a person did Ibogaine Alternative Detox treatment and failed to protect the early recovery with the proper environment (described below in this report as "Cocooning") away from triggers, and went back into their old triggering circumstances and relapsed and used opiates again, because the drug tolerance is reset to zero, it could result in an overdose.

We do encourage you to learn about this miracle treatment for opioid addiction. Again, we do not provide detox services, but we are happy to discuss your options with you to inform your own research and your own decisions about the treatments you wish to pursue. When you talk to us by phone, we can answer some of your questions and guide you to more information that is provided by the organizations that provide those treatments.

Early Recovery Phase

Protecting Your Early Recovery

Over the last few years, it has become crystal clear that for a person to succeed with long-term, sustainable recovery, the initial phase after detox is absolutely critical. We refer to the detox phase as the “Entering Recovery Phase.” The first few months after detox is called the “Early Recovery Phase.” This period of time is absolutely critical. If you are to succeed in long-term, sustainable recovery you must carefully protect your “early recovery” by deliberating creating specific conditions that will be suitable for optimum rest, healing and growth. In these crucial first few months, not only do you need to give your body a chance to heal and acclimate to a new state, you also need to shift your mindset, and begin to establish new healthy daily and weekly routines and practices. In early recovery you will also need to confronting old triggers and problems of “real life” and learn to cope with old challenges in new ways. To protect your early recovery, you will need to establish a healthy living environment with a strong support system.

Alternative medicine detox creates a biological shift and a mindset shift. It tends to increase neuroplasticity, what makes people more open and ready for change. It is a state that makes it easy to consider new perspectives to reevaluate old thinking patterns and including beliefs and attitudes and established new habits of thinking and behavior. However, it also is a somewhat raw and vulnerable state. Therefore you must create a very safe environment to heal in after alternative medicine detox.

Root Recovery’s years of experience providing “after care services” has allowed us to pioneer and innovate the “Cocooning Effect” as we call it. Our astonishing 70% success rate (compared to 10% industry-average success rate) is largely due to our “Cocooning” methodology. The key to cocooning, similar to when the caterpillar enters the cocoon to begin its metamorphosis into a butterfly, is to make sure that the environment is conducive for healing and transformation.  Entering a cocoon for 1-2 months, what is called “aftercare” in the recovery industry,  is important so that you have a safe container where the old triggers are not present.  We often use the metaphor of a caterpillar going into a cocoon because it is fairly well known that the caterpillar dissolves into a state called “goo” while its DNA transforms it into a butterfly.

Like the caterpillar, you may feel a little like “goo” for a month or two as you begin your own metamorphosis. It is important to realize that if you were to fail to create a safe environment for your early recovery, especially if you use one of the above-described alternative medicine detox methods, there are some risks. For example, if you go back to your old situation with unhealthy relationships and/or high stress environments triggers, then you would be reinforcing and cementing in the old habits because the additional neuro-plasticity.

Whatever you do for the first few months after alternative medicine detox will strengthen those habits. If you don’t enter a “cocoon”, then you could inadvertently reinforce the addiction habits. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial to be in a safe environment away from triggers at least long enough for their recovery to take root and establish a solid, sustainable foundation to begin the multi-year journey of sustainable recovery. Research shows that the first few months after beginning recovery make all the difference in the world in terms of recovery success rate. When you invest into the support structure of the cocoon, then you can avoid going right back in the old environment with the same triggers and unhealthy relationships and protect your early recovery.

Year One Recovery Phase

Your First Year of Sustainable Recovery

In the introduction to this Personalized Recovery Roadmap, we listed four criteria that are necessary for you to be successful with sustainable, long-term recovery. As a quick review, they were 1) Alternative Medicine Detox; 2) Protecting Early Recovery through Cocooning; 3) Uncovering and 4) Treating the Root Causes of the Addiction. The previous sections of this report outlined some of the reliable approaches for components #1 and #2. Now we will turn our attention to the next two critical components of long-term, sustainable recovery which are a major focus during your first year of recovery. Unfortunately, addiction treatment is a billion dollar industry that is both riddled with myths and misconceptions and is also highly profit driven. Many companies in this industry benefit from the  “once-an-addict, always-an-addict” lie as well as the “revolving door of rehab” which maximizes profits from insurance payers by only "babysitting" addicts for the first month as they detox, failing to even attempt to address the root causes of addiction, then sending them right back into the same trigger-rich environment that sent them to rehab in the first place. While tragic for the addict and their loved ones, this method results in a 90% chance of having a "repeat customer."

We hope this report will help you open your eyes to these tragic practices that most of the recovery industry engages in, and to begin to see that there is, in fact, a path out of addiction. The road to sustainable recovery begins with an understanding that "going to meetings" (that reinforce the "once-an-addict-always-an-addict" lie, or going to conventional rehab (designed to exploit insurance companies and turn addicts into repeat customers) rarely leads to success. Those conventional approaches have a 10% success rate (a 90% failure rate). Conversely, if you follow our roadmap, you have the opportunity to be in our 70% success rate category. The key to sustainable recovery is to understand that it requires a true transformation of not only behaviors, but also mindset and even sense of identity. This takes years, not months.  Year one will determine whether you are successful or not in your recovery from addiction.

Research shows that if an addict entering recovery can stay clean and sober, and begin to heal the root causes of addiction during their first year of recovery, their chances of success long-term sky rocket.

Put simply, your first year in recovery will make or break your success.

During your first year of recovery, you must uncovering and treating the root causes of your addiction and you must develop the necessary skills that sustainable recovery requires. To accomplish this, you will need to have a robust support system that includes a therapist, a recovery coach and a recovery community. It is very difficult to achieve sustainable recovery without these components firmly in place during your first year.

The most crucial phase of your “journey of sustainable recovery” is the first year because that is where the major mindset, thinking, emotional and lifestyle changes occur, and it is in the first year that the necessary life skills are adopted and begin to grow.

This multi-year journey to “sustainable recovery” has many things in common with the “hero’s journey” that much literature and many films illustrate.

True recovery from addiction takes a minimum of three years. Therefore, you must plan out how you will approach your multi-year recovery process. Previously in this report we talked about the crucial "Beginning Recovery Phase" (detox treatment) and "Early Recovery Phase" (the first few months after detox in your protective cocoon).

Now we will focus on your first year of recovery.

On a “hero’s journey” the person must face many difficult challenges, and along the way, not only learn the necessary skills to confront the challenge of sobriety, but they must also transform their very sense of identity in the process. Only by transforming can the hero “return” home changed as a new person. Similarly, we see the “journey of sustainable recovery” as a multi-year transformation from addict to “adept.” The addict develops the requisite mental, emotional, relational and vocational life skills so that they become proficient, adept, at living a health sober life. It's not just about “not using,” it's about transforming into the type of person that transcends the addiction and moves on with the work of creating a great life!

Our focus at Root Recovery is to ensure the first year provides a solid foundation for a sustainable recovery. To ensure long-term success, during your first year, you need to become  proficient at managing thoughts, emotions, and reactions so one can successfully deal with triggers, problems, and conflict in a healthy manner. You will also need to complete the deep work required for long-term healing of the root causes of addiction during your first year. This will lead to a process of recovering and integrate aspects of your self that you lost touch with during your addiction. When you have the proper support of a robust recovery program, a therapist, recovery coach and recovery community, then you can use this first year to ocus on growing and expanding a new version of your self and a new life and lifestyle. This includes learning how to live a healthy, balanced, purposeful, fulfilling life. Our 70% success rate at Root Recovery has proven that this is completely possible if you take the correct path during the crucial first year on your journey of sustainable recovery.
